Implementing Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs in Health Systems:

An Interprofessional Team Approach

About this initiative

Antimicrobial resistance is a serious worldwide public health problem due to the emergence of multidrug-resistant and extreme drug-resistant microorganisms and the lack of antimicrobial agents in the research and development pipeline. Led by an interprofessional team, antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) improve antimicrobial use and reduce antimicrobial resistance, mortality, hospital length of stay, and health care costs.

This educational initiative is designed by recognized experts for health care professionals from health systems interested in establishing an ASP and institutions with an established program. Information on where to start and how to achieve success using easy-to-implement strategies will be provided, including approaches for those in hospitals without a full-time infectious diseases physician. Tips for improving established ASPs will also be provided.

Physicians, pharmacists, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners play an important role in establishing ASPs to prevent and overcome antimicrobial resistance and improve patient outcomes. Continuing education credit for the entire interprofessional team is available for educational activities in this initiative.

Developed by an educational steering committee of experts in antimicrobial stewardship, this tiered learning initiative is designed to provide practitioners with timely education and resources to develop and improve ASPs and patient care.

Featured CE programming includes live and on-demand archived webinars, as well as an online discussion guide. Recognizing that an interprofessional team approach is essential to successful ASPs, the CE activities are accredited for continuing education credit for physicians, pharmacists, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners.
